Time Out! A Crucial Call to Action for Every Sports Event Public Service Announcement: Prioritizing

Hello everyone,

Today's newsletter isn't just another issue; it's a vital Public Service Announcement and a heartfelt call to action for all parents, school principals, coaches, athletic trainers, and anyone involved in sports and physical activities.

Time Out for Heart Safety!

Before any sporting event or practice session—whether it involves youth, young adults, or adults—it's time we all collectively call a "Time Out!" for heart safety. Use your voice, a microphone, or over the loudspeaker. The focus?

Make sure an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is ALWAYS on the sidelines.

The Stark Reality: Sudden Cardiac Arrests in the Young

Every day in the United States, approximately 3.5 children experience sudden cardiac arrest, and about 1,000 adults face the same fate. Most have no prior knowledge of any heart condition. This is a sobering reality we cannot afford to ignore.

Pre-Screening: A Must for Young Athletes

We strongly advocate for pre-screening all young athletes with an EKG. While it may not catch everything, it can identify one in every 300 unknown cardiac issues before it's too late. Reach out to us for resources — some screenings are free or at a minimal cost, like $25.

What's the price of a life?

Implementing the "Time Out" Protocol

At every sporting gathering, we suggest the following protocol:

  1. Locate the AED: Confirm where the AED is and ensure it is immediately accessible, not locked away in an office or hanging on a distant wall.

  2. Identify CPR-trained individuals: Ask who is trained and willing to perform CPR in an emergency. Raise your hand; we need you to be BRAVE and BE the ONE!! No standing by…

  3. Practice Makes Perfect: Conduct a quick, 90-second CPR practice session right there (contact us for easy-to-implement ideas!).

  4. Enjoy the Game: After ensuring safety measures are in place, go ahead and live, love, laugh, and play!

Making Sports Safer

By taking these proactive steps, we can transform the safety landscape of sports and recreational activities. Remember, a life-saving intervention could be needed anytime, and being prepared can make all the difference.

For more information, resources on pre-screening, or ideas for your quick CPR practice session, please don't hesitate to contact us at Rescue RN. Together, we can make every sporting event a heart-safe zone.

Let's not wait for a tragedy to remind us of what we could have done. Take action now, and ensure our athletes are as safe as possible.

Together, we can turn every sports field into a zone of safety and health. Thank you for being a part of this crucial initiative.

Stay safe and heart-strong,
